About the Dental Plan

Do I have to use a dentist who is participating in the MetLife Dental Preferred Provider network?

No, you are not required to use a preferred dentist. If you choose to use a dentist who does not participate in the MetLife Dental Preferred Provider Network there is no penalty; however, you will not receive the benefit of the network discounts. For more information about the MetLife Dental Preferred Provider Network, including participating dentists, visit MetLife’s website at or call MetLife customer service at 1-800-942-0854.

Can I elect the Dental Plan if I am not in the CITGO Medical Plan?

Yes, the dental plan is separate from the Medical Plan.

Is there a Dental identification card?

MetLife does not issue ID cards. Simply advise your dentist your coverage is administered through MetLife and provide your social security number. Dental providers verify coverage using a MetLife provider portal.

What should I think about when making my dental elections?

As you are considering your options, you might want to think about the following:

  • Does the dental coverage offer benefits that could be used by me or my family?
  • Is other dental coverage available to you or your family members?
  • How do the plan provisions (deductible, covered percentages, annual maximums and services) compare to what’s available to you under this benefits program?
  • What is the cost of the other plan? Will children in your family need braces or other orthodontic work this year?

What is the difference between the basic and plus options?

The dental plus plan has some enhanced coverage available. Coverage for implants and orthodontic services (child and adult) is offered under the dental plus plan. Also, the plus option offers a higher annual maximum ($3000.00 in-network, $1500.00 out-of-network) than the basic option ($1500.00 in/out network).

  Are crowns covered under Dental?

Major services under the Basic offer 50% coverage (in-network) 40% (out-of-network) and under the Plus plan offer 60% (in-network) 40% (out-of-network).

Is Orthodontia covered under the MetLife plan?

No coverage is available for orthodontic services in the Dental Basic Plan. In order to obtain orthodontic coverage, you must enroll in the Dental Plus Plan. The Dental Plus Plan provides 60% coverage for In-Network orthodontia services after deductible, up to a $3,000 lifetime maximum and provides 40% coverage for Out-of-Network orthodontia services after deductible, up to a $1,500 lifetime maximum.
